Winding Down

Our tiki cabana.

This is perhaps one of the most unique campsites we have had. We were offered a little corner of this Glen Cove Marina in Darlington, Maryland. We found some flat space to set up our tents next to this tiki bar kind of picnic table. The place is all lit up with lights and will be all night, we suspect, but it’s kind of cool.

The opportunity to stay here is a perfect ending to our week. We haven’t really met very many new people along the way this year but the ones we have met are wonderful and Byron Young, the manager of this marina, is amazing. Not only did he offer us free camping space. But when we asked if he could open the store so we could buy ice cream (the sign on the window for ice cream next to the closed sign was disappointing on a 97 degree day) he agreed and then gave us the ice cream as a gift along with two small bottles of Fireball. We split one before dinner and hope that it helps with sleep.

We both ate one of each!

He was a character and we have discovered over the years that the river people are characters and at the heart of their character is deep knowledge of the river and sincere hospitality for all those who share the adventure and respect of the river.
