Three Mile Island

On the rivers we have paddled we have seen many a power plant. Hydro and coal but never a nuclear plant. Today we passed the Decommissioned Three Mile Island nuclear plant a few miles down river from Harrisburg. It was shut down just a few years ago but is famous for its 1979 partial meltdown of the core..

Nuclear power plants were going to be the answer to clean power many decades ago. Humanity constantly comes up with answers to our problems which often cause other problems. It is strange to see this power plant represent a solution that came in my lifetime and went in my lifetime. Of course other such plants exist around the globe and some have never had any problems but now we are looking to other sources of power.

Water and steam have produced heat for centuries. Here on this river are both kinds of plants in addition to TMI. they are still going strong.

What else might we look to that has been successful for centuries or more rather than decades? being in nature so directly for days at a time makes me appreciate the old ways.
